About “Ueno, a Global Capital of Culture”

The year 2020, during which the Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics will be held, will serve as an opportunity to build a new Japan. We are called upon to strive to advance Japan further as the base for global cultural exchange by hosting a wide variety of cultural programs. Ueno Park is blessed with historical resources, including Kaneiji, Ueno Toshogu, and Kiyomizudo as well as other historical buildings and sites from the Edo Era, and a rich natural environment including a well-known cherry blossom area and Shinobazu Pond. Furthermore, this area also hosts various cultural facilities such as the leading museum, art museum, zoo, and music hall, which allow art-related universities in Japan to develop their countless respective cultural and artistic activities. With easy access from Narita Airport, Ueno Park, as a Global Capital of Culture, is expected to become an international symbol. This will be achieved by increasing the synergy between various organizations and groups through their mutual collaboration and cooperation, as well as by leveraging the latent potential of the various cultural resources held by each and utilizing such resources effectively.
